Top 10 Thai Food
Posted: 9th October 2005

I spent most of the day at the Book Fair at Queen Sirikit Convention Hall. The big fairs are usually during the school holidays in April and October. I used to comment that Thai people don’t like reading much (apart from cartoon books), but every year more and more people go to these book fairs. Today was packed and I could hardly move. I bought quite a few books that I will share with you later, but first I want to show you this book which is all about the Top 10 of Thai Food! Obviously one of my favourite subjects. As you can see, the book is in Thai. I think I already have the best of the cookery books in English. Most of them are quite limited and repeat themselves a lot. So, that is why today I was browsing through the cook books written by Thai people. A better selection for sure. I bought half a dozen cook books which will help me a lot identifying the ingredients of street food that I have already photographed. I could blog about Thai food every day, I am just lacking the information sometimes.

Anyway, according to this book, the following is the Top 10 list of Thai Food:

  1. Hot and sour soup with shrimp
  2. Green curry with chicken
  3. Fried Noodles
  4. Pork fried in basil
  5. Red curry with roast duck
  6. Coconut soup with chicken
  7. Thai style salad with beef
  8. Satay pork
  9. Fried chicken with cashew
  10. Panang curry

In Thai:

  1. ต้มยำกุ้ง (tom yum goong)
  2. แกงเขียวหวาน (gaeng kiaw waen gai)
  3. ผัดไทย (pad tai)
  4. ผัดกระเพรา (pat ga-prao)
  10. พะแนง (pa-naeng)

Thai food is a definite 'Richard' 'fave-topic' and has once again given us all a few snaps to lick our lips at.
In regards to what 'Oakie' mentioned, i too read a list a like this about a year back on American's Favourite Thai Dishes and their list read pretty similar to this one but still not the same.

It doesn't surprise me too that Thais and Foreigner lovers of Thai food have quite different tastes.

What happened to 'Somtum'? 'Thai Style Papaya Salad'. Dont get me wrong but this dish is up there right behind 'Tom Yum Kung' in the eyes of a Thai. Then, if you would like to argue that 'Somtum' isn't really Thai food but Isarn then howabout the likes of Pork Satay'?. Satay is a Malaysian dish but since the Thais like pork they just replaced the chicken.

As Oakie mentioned #5 is not that so popular a Thai dish whatsoever in Thailand. #7 too isn't that popular as a decent proportion of Thai folks don't like or don't eat beef'.

Forigners love #9 and i always order it for my Farang friends but again it isnt that popular with Thais.

The comparisons are interesting.

The book cover actually said "Top 10 Thai Food in Foreign Land". And indeed these are the top 10 items people would order at Thai restaurants here in the US. #5 surprises me though as it is not a too common item on Americanized Thai restaurant's menu. That may be a European ranking.

Cool book Richard! Wow #5 is the only one on the list that I don't know how to make here at home or is not one of my own 'top ten favorites.'

In fact I may take on a challenge for myself to do a blog like I did for making Pork fried in basil ผัดกระเพรา (pat ga-prao, but Beef for me please) for each one on the list. What do you think?

The other thing is that it's cool there is the book fair itself. In addition to being a Thaiphile I am also a bibliophile (lover of books, natch) so to be at a huge book fair IN Thailand? That's DOUBLE Heaven haha!

Mostly I read the blogs in the evenings during weekdays - tired and hungry. And then there is mostly always Richard's food blog, which makes me even more hungry.

I am worried that one day it may so happen that if Richard does not write his food-blog I may not be able to have my dinner!

My favorites are Tom Yum Goong and Geng Kiaw Wan and they are on the top 2 spots. I have Thai taste. Pork Satay will be hard to get in Malaysia now. Will be nice to have the names of some not so common dishes in Thai Scripts. Romanised Thai can be very misleading. Thanks.
